Practice Exercises

Part 1: Lower Pitches Fingering (Mandra Saptak)

0:00
SaNiDhaPa

Demonstrates notes from middle octave Sa down to lower octave Pa by progressively closing more holes (Sa with 3 holes closed, Ni↓ with 4, Dha↓ with 5, Pa↓ with all 6 holes closed as the lowest note).

Tip: Be cautious about closing all holes completely, ensuring no air leaks. Practice taking a good breath and holding the note for as long as possible. Master each note before moving on.

Part 2: Higher Pitches Technique (Taar Saptak)

0:00
PaPaDhaDhaNiNiSaSaReRe

Explains how to play higher octave notes by increasing the speed of air blown into the flute, without changing the fingering of the corresponding lower octave note (e.g., Pa↓ to Pa, Sa to Sa↑).

Tip: Increase the blowing speed just a little bit, not intensity or force. The technique has to be correct, and the speed of air consistent. Practice slowly, one note at a time, allowing time to master the breath control. Breathing exercises are important. First, master the lower pitches, then proceed to higher pitches.
